How To Become A Life & Health Insurance Agent In New Mexico

Life and Health Pre-Licensing Requirements for New Mexico Resident Agents

You do not have to meet any pre-licensing requirements to earn a life or health insurance license in New Mexico. However, if you do not take the right preparatory courses, you will be unprepared for the exam.

New Mexico Life and Health Insurance Exam Requirements

In New Mexico, you will apply for your insurance license before you take the licensing exam. To do this, get Form 210 from the New Mexico Office of Superintendent of Insurance (OSI). You must also request a Candidate Bulletin and fill out the Examination Registration Form. In addition, you must get fingerprinted through 3M/CogentID.

Submit your forms and any other information online to Prometric along with a registration fee. Prometric will assign you a test date and location. Before registering, make sure you study sufficiently for the exam, as you may have limited time once your test date is scheduled. Typically, candidates study for many hours before sitting for the test.
Be sure you arrive on time with a valid photo I.D. on your scheduled date. This is a computer-administered, multiple-choice exam. You are required to answer 70 percent or more of the questions correctly to pass and be eligible for your license. If you pass, your results are automatically submitted and your license will be sent automatically. You have three licensing exam options in New Mexico:
  • Life Insurance: 100 questions, 2 hours
  • Health Insurance: 100 questions, 2 hours
  • Life, Accident and Health Insurance: 150 questions, 2 hours and 45 minutes

Since Life & Health licensing is state specific, your exam will include questions on your state's insurance regulations for the product(s) you want to sell. Your exam covers topics such as the following:
