How to Get Your Insurance License Online

7/2/2026

Most of the insurance licensing process can now be completed from home. Not all of it — and knowing which steps still require you to show up somewhere prevents an unpleasant surprise late in the process.

Quick answer: Pre-licensing education, the license application, and (in a growing number of states) the exam itself can be completed online. Fingerprinting almost always requires an in-person appointment. Plan for one trip out of the house.

What Can Be Done Online

The one reliable in-person step is fingerprinting. Everything else is either online or optionally online depending on your state.

Step 1: Online Pre-Licensing Education

Most states that require pre-licensing education accept state-approved online courses.

What to verify before you buy:

  • State approval. The course must be approved by *your* state for *your* line of authority. A generic national course may not satisfy your state's requirement.
  • Hour tracking. States that mandate a specific number of hours require the provider to track and certify seat time. This is why approved online courses often will not let you skip ahead — the timer is a regulatory requirement, not a design flaw.
  • Certificate of completion. You will need it to register for the exam in many states.
  • Content currency. Insurance law changes. Confirm the material reflects current state requirements.

Our insurance pre-licensing courses cover state-specific requirements for property and casualty, life and health, and adjuster lines.

Step 2: The Exam — Testing Center or Remote?

This is the step with the most state-to-state variation.

Testing center. The traditional route. You schedule an appointment, arrive with two forms of ID, store your belongings in a locker, and take the exam on a supplied workstation. Available everywhere.

Remote proctoring. An increasing number of states permit online proctored exams taken at home. Requirements are strict:

  • A reliable, reasonably fast internet connection
  • A working webcam and microphone
  • A private room with a closed door, no other people, and no background noise
  • A clear desk — no papers, phones, second monitors, or drinks unless specifically permitted
  • A room scan at the start, conducted with your webcam
  • Continuous monitoring for the full exam duration

Remote proctoring is convenient and unforgiving. Connection drops, a family member opening the door, or looking away from the screen too long can void your attempt. If your home environment is not genuinely controllable, the testing center is the safer choice.

Check whether your state offers remote proctoring at our state insurance licensing pages or with your state's testing vendor.

Step 3: Fingerprinting — the In-Person Step

Most states require fingerprinting and a criminal background check, and this generally means visiting an authorized live-scan location.

Practical notes:

  • Schedule it early, in parallel with your studying. Processing can take one to four weeks and it is the most common bottleneck.
  • Some states process prints before the exam, some after. Check the required sequence.
  • Prior convictions do not automatically disqualify you, but they must be disclosed. Non-disclosure is treated far more seriously than the underlying matter.

Step 4: Online Application

License applications are generally filed electronically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) or your state's own portal.

You will need your exam result, your pre-licensing completion certificate, fingerprint confirmation, and payment. Approval times range from same-day in some states to several weeks in others.

How to Evaluate an Online Course

The online pre-licensing market ranges from excellent to worthless. Signals worth checking:

Good signs:

  • Explicit state approval listed for your state and line
  • Practice exams that mirror the actual exam's format and length
  • Content organized to the state exam outline
  • A glossary and searchable reference material
  • Support available when you get stuck

Warning signs:

  • Vague claims of "approved in all states" without specifics
  • Guaranteed pass claims — no provider controls your exam
  • No practice exams, or practice questions that are trivially easy
  • Material with no visible revision date
  • Pricing that seems disconnected from the market in either direction

Studying Online Effectively

Self-paced online study fails for the same reason gym memberships fail: no external structure.

  1. Set the exam date first. Before you begin studying. A fixed date converts intention into schedule.
  2. Block specific hours on a calendar. "Evenings" is not a plan. "Tuesday and Thursday 7–9 p.m." is.
  3. Do not binge the course to satisfy the hour requirement. Seat time is not learning time.
  4. Take full-length timed practice exams, not just question banks. Stamina and pacing are separate skills.
  5. Track your section scores. Study your weakest two areas, not the ones you enjoy.

Timeline for a Fully-Online Path

Four to eight weeks is realistic for most candidates working full time. See how long does it take to get licensed.

Continuing Education Is Also Online

Once licensed, ongoing CE is almost universally available online, including the mandatory ethics component most states require.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my insurance license entirely online?

Almost — fingerprinting usually requires an in-person visit. Everything else can typically be done remotely.

Is an online course as good as a classroom course?

For exam preparation, yes, when the course is state-approved and well built. Classroom instruction helps candidates who need external accountability.

Do employers care that I studied online?

No. They care that you are licensed.

Can I take the exam at home?

In a growing number of states, yes, with remote proctoring and strict environment requirements. Check your state.

Do I need a job first?

No. Insurance licensing requires no sponsorship, unlike securities exams. Many people license first and then job hunt.
