This course provides a comprehensive overview of the Indiana Workers' Compensation Act including the current structure of the Workers' Compensation Board of Indiana.

It covers the five (5) basic elements of compensability including calculation of disability benefits, average weekly wage and permanent partial impairment ratings. Also included are discussions regarding permanent total disability and death benefit claims, as well as settling claims and the hearing procedures in Indiana.

By taking this course, you will learn the ins and outs of how insurance companies operate in Indiana. The course is delivered via self-paced, online modules and an end-of-course exam, as described below.

  • Indiana Workers' Compensation Insurance System Overview

    This module covers the technical aspects of insurance in Indiana including how insurance underwriters determine the premium employers pay and what factors drive up the cost of a workers' compensation insurance policy.

  • An Overview of Indiana's Workers' Compensation Legal System (The Basics)

    This module will give you an overview of who is covered under the Workers' Compensation Act and the five (5) basic elements of compensability. We will also discuss reporting and injury and providing medical care to employees, as well as instruction as to how to properly calculate disability benefits, waiting periods and the use of the appropriate forms as required by the Workers' Compensation Board of Indiana.

  • An Overview of Indiana's Workers' Compensation System (Intermediate Level)

    In this module, you will learn the available defenses to an Indiana Workers' Compensation claim using the statutory affirmative defenses as well as defenses available to confront the five (5) basic elements of compensability. Also discussed are the requirements and issues related to Board appointed independent medical examinations and direction of medical care, and considerations involved in settling a claim including the pros and cons of various types of settlements.

  • An Overview of Indiana's Workers' Compensation System (Advanced Level)

    This module will deal with a variety of advanced issues including burdens of proof and evaluations of permanent total disability claims. We will also analyze death benefit claims and who is a "dependant" under the Act. Lastly, we will deal with various unique Indiana litigation issues which include our subrogation and apportionment statutes, the multiple digit loss calculations, the appeal process and vocational rehabilitation.

  • Exam

    An exam is included in the Indiana Workers' Compensation Series. It consists of 50 questions with a 90 minute time period. You must first take the Indiana Workers' Compensation Series training modules before taking this exam. You will have one attempt to pass this exam with a passing score of 70% or higher. (Additional exams are $50.)
